Our beautiful tropical island of Utila, nestles in the western Caribbean Sea and is located approximately 18 miles (29 km) from the Honduras mainland port of La Ceiba. Our island is just 11 km long and 4 km at its widest and surrounded by vast coral reefs with prolific undersea life. The smallest of the major islands in The Bay Islands group, we are renowned as being one of the least expensive and most beautiful places in the world for a scuba diving vacation.

Most of the population, which averages around 4,500 people (nobody knows for sure), lives on and around Eastern Harbor. The Scuba Dive shops, Bars, Restaurants and many of the Hotels are located on the main street which runs around the Harbor from "The Point" where the old airport was once located to the start of Chepes Beach, just past Sandy Bay. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes to walk from the beach at one end of the main street, to the beach at the other end.

Utila is home to many ex-pats who have retired here, mostly from the US and Canada, but also from Europe and even further flung places. A significant percentage of the 'born and bred' Utilians also hold dual Honduras/US citizenship and have strong family ties to the USA. English is widely spoken and US Dollars are readily accepted (but you will receive your change in Lempiras, the Honduras national currency).

Getting here is relatively easy. For international arrivials most people fly into either Roatan or San Pedro Sula. there is a twice daily ferry service to the mainland and our small airport receives scheduled flights 3 times a week with charter flights ranging for small 3 seater aircraft to larger 30 seater aircraft arriving on an almost daily basis.

You will not find International or even National chain restaurants and hotels in Utila. All businesses are run by local families or ex-pats living here. Utila has a very strong sense of community - everybody knows everybody. If you are looking for a relaxed, safe, laid back lifestyle, then Utila may be just the authentic Caribbean Island you are looking for.
